Look who we ran into today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church North Campus! Mayor Jane Castor was at the quarterly outreach event for homeless and neighbors in need, co-sponsored by Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Tampa International Airport and Tampa Police Department. There were haircuts, health services, showers, raffles for bikes and bus passes, and dozens of community partners including Love INC of Metro Tampa — all working to serve and help our Tampa community members thrive. ... Love INC requires mutual participation and contribution from both our guests and ourselves. In return for below-market rent for his room in a Portico Workforce Housing Solutions home, tenant David K teamed with his mentor coach Tom Henry to make home repairs, including replacing a defective door at our Yukon Street property. In addition to his home improvement contribution, David is held accountable to build his savings account for permanent housing, interface weekly with his mentor coach and meet monthly with Love INC and member church program directors for plan compliance reviews. Love INC cultivates leadership in both guests and volunteers. Want to read more about how Love INC cultivates leadership? Check out Mike's latest blog post at: www.loveinctampa.org/?p=4174 ... At 48, Ben had never had a driver's license or held a job. He had always lived with his parents who both recently passed away. Ben was referred to Love INC by his father's employer. He was not able to pay rent and was seeking shelter with friends, at Homeless Helping Homeless and the Salvation Army. Ben lacked a support system but still managed to find a job at Armature Works and is enrolled in the Metropolitan Ministries culinary program to receive a certification to become a chef. Ben is now housed and a thriving participant of Portico Workforce Housing Solutions. Ben has been connected to caring Resource Navigators from our member churches who have wrapped their arms around him, invited him to church, encouraged and mentored him. Love INC has connected Ben to grief counseling, housing, a bike referral, clothing, and spiritual support—Love INC advocates boldly for those He loves! ... See MoreSee Less

Mike shared this with the team at Love INC of Metro Tampa a while ago, and we've been meaning to post it forever:
"During our bi-weekly Sacred Heart Church St. Vincent de Paul collections, I monitor the Twiggs Street collection basket. Last week, after being seated for our 10:30 Mass, I noticed a homeless man sitting next to the basket containing $20 dollars in loose bills. My focus during Mass was the potential thief. When I could get close, I retrieved the $20 bills before they were stolen. At the conclusion of Mass, the homeless man passed by the basket I was holding and gave his offering - $.45 cents. He gave sacrificially; far more than my abundance contribution."
"And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.” - Luke 21:1-4 ...
